An email on March 4, 2004, stated the following: I spent three nights emailing back and forth with my very smart nephew who was excited about the movie. In the end, he did go but really changed a lot in his thinking. He went in with a more discerning eye because of the article I sent him by the ex-priest. Here is what he said: "yes, arent we all sick of this? I cant help but put (another) final word on this. I slept fine, did not have nightmares or anything of the sort.... but after sleeping on it........ I do not feel edified by this movie. I do not think that the images it leaves in my mind in the long term are edifying. I dont want last nights email to sound as if I were staunchly defending the movie. I just dont think that heretical teachings were presented in such a manner that they will confuse people-- I dont think the movie does a good job of "teaching" these views that the priest warned about. Yes, I can see the influence, but only by knowing what to look for. They are subtle (I think) and will go over the heads of the large majority who see this film. But I dont feel edified. And I wont encourage others to see it. I said last night that it is powerful enough that it may spark conversions. I still think that, but I would certainly want any convert from this movie to immediately be under the care of a well-grounded church for solid discipleship. There is nothing in this movie that could be called "instruction" in discipleship. I myself think that we agree more than we disagree, N. And sorry again for my initial reaction to your article. Perhaps deep down I knew what a time commitment and emotional investment it would be to dissect this film, and I didnt want to deal with it. I dont however regret our talks and I must thank you for initiating them. I love you. P.S..and then the question could be posed to me: "If you dont think a movie portraying the gospel is necessarily heretical, why is it that you dont feel edified?" Hmm.......... Yeah, its an interesting paradox, isnt it? Which is why I will not be recommending it. I do think there is a lot going on beneath the surface with this film......... |
