MORROCK NEWS DIGEST * NO MORE SLEEPING ON THE COUCH: JANUARY 26-28, 2001 - Virginia legislators narrowly passed a bill mandating that "spaces such as kitchens, living rooms, dining rooms, and family rooms shall not be occupied for sleeping purposes," according to the Washington Post. Submitted by Northern Virginia Senator Leslie Byrne, a Democrat, the proposed law is aimed at preventing overcrowding, lowered property values, and neighborhood nuisances, supporters say. Opponents claim the law is targeted, unfairly, at immigrant and minority communities, and will also affect families who care for elderly or disabled relatives. The current rule in Fairfax, similar to surrounding counties, allows no more than four people to live under the same roof. The new bill faces a recount on Monday.
