A statement sent to United States President George W. Bush by the World Alliance of Reformed Churches (WARC) has drawn support from leading members of US churches who have long worked on the issues it addresses, which range from the death penalty to greenhouse gases. The statement, sent to President Bush and key members of his cabinet by WARC's executive committee, which met in Holland, Michigan, from 26 July to 4 August, was strongly critical of a range of US policies. 10/10/2001 Ecumenical News International Ecumenical chapel in Brussels will help give 'a soul' to Europe
London (ENI). Church representatives have welcomed the inauguration of an ecumenical "Chapel for Europe" in Brussels to serve staff members of European Union institutions located there.
"This spiritual beacon highlights the churches' joint presentation of Christian ideals to the European institutions," said Stewart Lamont, the Brussels-based executive secretary of the Conference of European Churches, which groups most of Europe's Protestant, Anglican and Orthodox churches.

Deal with root causes of Middle East violence, says ecumenical leader Geneva (ENI). The general secretary of the World Council of Churches, Dr Konrad Raiser, has described continued Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory as a "clear violation of international law". Speaking after a major consultation on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict organized by the WCC at its Geneva headquarters this week, Dr Raiser said that Israel was in a situation of "impunity" where violations of international law were not being followed up by effective sanctions. Dr Raiser was interviewed before the news of the attack by a Palestinian suicide bomber on a Jerusalem restaurant and Israel's subsequent retaliation against Palestinian targets. [ENI-08/10/01]

STANLEY SAYS GOD WON'T SEND PEOPLE TO HELL WHO HAVE NOT HEARD GOSPEL
-On a recent radio broadcast, popular Southern Baptist pastor/author Charles Stanley said that God will not send people to hell if they have never heard the gospel. Following is an extract: "…[W]ould God send somebody to hell because they did not receive Jesus whom they never heard about, never had the privilege of knowing about? And my answer is: No, he would not" (Stanley, In Touch Ministries, "Reconciling God's Love with His Justice," July 31, 2001). This is a great error. In Ephesians 2, God describes the condition of those who are outside of Christ. They are dead in trespasses and sins (v. 1), by nature the children of wrath (v. 3), having no hope, and without God in the world (v. 12). This is the unsaved man's condition regardless of whether or not he has heard the gospel. POTTER POPULARITY SOARS-The marketing of J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter will be seen this fall in books, a feature film, toys, and perhaps in schools. SBC's Light, in a two-page article, quotes an occult expert who says: "Whether Rowling realizes it or not, she is promoting witchcraft/occultism/Wicca in the form of ethical and moral subjectivism." A big problem is that Potter, the hero, is a morally inconsistent character and the story's "ethics are muddled." He adds: "In short, Rowling's moral universe is a topsy-turvy world with no firm rules of right and wrong.

The Harry Potter books unquestionably present and glamorize real world occult practices and techniques." The books glorify behavior that is inconsistent with biblical morality and ethics, and contain child inappropriate humor, gratuitous violence and a few harmful stereotypes." USA Today reports Ted Koppel will start the series with a profile of the nation's only homosexual retirement community in Fla. The series will apparently try to portray homosexuals as living normal lives, attending church, bowling, and facing stress at work (WITW). LEROY JENKINS, 'FAITH HEALER'-Flamboyant faith-healer evangelist Leroy Jenkins was convicted of arson conspiracy in 1979, but his Healing Waters Cathedral (Delaware, Ohio) is now an enterprise with nationwide TV broadcasts and sales of "healing water." The thrice-married evangelist is said to combine "a little bit of Jesus, and a little bit of Elvis." His Las Vegas controversial marriage last Jan. 12 (later annulled), 16 days after his 71-year-old bride's husband died, drew charges from her family that Jenkins wanted her fortune of about $4 million (8/4 Huntsville Times). ECKSTEIN BUILDS BRIDGES - CHRISTIANS, JEWS Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein is president of the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews. He was recently invited to air a weekly half-hour worldwide broadcast on TBN (Paul/Jan Crouch's Trinity Broadcasting Network) - the first time in history that a Jew will have an ongoing slot on the charismatic station.

His vision is that Christians and Jews can dialogue and fellowship with each other on issues of common concern. But 1 John 1:7 & 2 Cor. 6:14 forbid such fellowship. A Religion Today article says "the identity of the Messiah remains the core dividing point." It was thus when Jesus was on earth. John 7:43 says "So there was a division among the people because of him." Eckstein says Jews have a special covenant with God that does not require the Christian concept of salvation (9/15/98 CC). He likes Jerry Falwell's position of not having a "special targeted ministry toward the Jewish people." But we must lovingly "target" all those outside Christ for the Gospel and not play word games with serious matters.[The Calvary Contender, Sept. 2001]

AWANA PROMOTES BRUCE WILKINSON AND PRAYER OF JABEZ. Friday Church News Notes, October 5, 2001 (David W. Cloud, Fundamental Baptist Information Service, P.O. Box 610368, Port Huron, MI 48061, 866-295-4143, fbns@wayoflife.org) - On its web site, the Awana organization recently featured an interview with Bruce Wilkinson, author of the multi-million seller, The Prayer of Jabez. Wilkinson encourages people to pray the Jabez prayer by rote every day for the next 25 years. As a result, he promises that "the day will come in your life that God's blessings will become so full that it will overflow and you will say to God, 'Please stop blessing me so much.'"

If the Jabez prayer is so absolutely crucial, why did the Lord Jesus Christ and the Apostles never mention it? Why did the Lord Jesus warn against rote prayers? There are many prayers in the New Testament; why not use those? Is it not because the prayer of Jabez is held forth by Wilkinson as a secret to success and prosperity? Certainly this is how it is being used by charismatic churches across the land.

Awana is an ecumenical organization. This is evident in its promotion of Bruce Wilkinson, who, along with Roman Catholic priests, has been featured at the radically ecumenical Promise Keepers meetings. Any
fundamentalist church that uses the Awana children's program should at the very least disassociate itself from the Awana organization and from the ecumenical affiliations that Awana encourages at the local level.

CHRISTIANITY ALMOST VANQUISHED IN BRITAIN. Friday Church News Notes, October 5, 2001 (Fundamental Baptist Information Service, P.O. Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor, Archbishop of Westminster, told a gathering of priests last month that Christ was being replaced by music, New Age beliefs, the
environmental movement, the occult and the free-market economy.

The Cardinal, leader of 4.1 million Catholics in England and Wales, said people were seeking transient happiness in alcohol, drugs, pornography and recreational sex (9/6 The Times). He spoke of the damage and shame to his church by the scandal of pedophile priests. Archbishop of Canterbury Dr. George Carey last year said a 'tacit atheism' prevails in Britain and 'concentration on the here-and-now renders a thought of eternity irrelevant.'"

RUETHER CALLS DIVORCE 'DIVERSITY OF PARTNERING'-Rosemary Ruether is a radical left-wing, pro-marxist, apostate feminist theologian associated with the United Methodist Garrett School of Theology. She advocates different forms of "family" bonds, even pronouncing her blessing on the tragic trauma of divorce terming it "a diversity of partnering." (7-8/01 Fund. Digest) Ruether says we should seek "compassionate" ways of weeding out people (9/1/98 CC). This Catholic theologian is a universalist who rejects historic Christianity. BOONE DOWNPLAYS DOCTRINE Charismatics have long said "Doctrine divides, experience unites." In an Aug. 17 interview, Pat Boone said: "We don't all have our doctrine all completely correct but God doesn't judge us on our understanding of doctrine. SHOULD ROMAN CATHOLICS BE EVANGELIZED? This is the title of a good resolution of the recent 65th Synod of the Bible Presbyterian Church, from which we take the following adapted excerpt. There has been confusion and a growing indifference whether we should evangelize Roman Catholics. Prominent New Evangelical spokesmen like Charles Colson and J.I. Packer have said Protestants can find common ground with Roman Catholics in many areas of theology.

These self-appointed representatives of ECT I and II have accommodated RC theology in the area of justification before God, while Roman Catholicism has NOT left its traditional teachings nor moved closer to the Reformation truths. Rather, the official position of Roman Catholicism as taught in its modern catechisms is still the counter-Reformation errors of the Council of Trent. The 16th century anathemas, that threatened souls with hellfire for believing the Bible, led to many Protestant leaders being consigned to the flames of the execution stake in RC countries. We affirm that Bible-believers must view Roman Catholics as lost sinners who need the saving message of God's grace. 'MOTHER GOD' WORSHIPED AT CBF MEETING The 10th anniversary General Assembly of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship (liberal/moderate split-off of SBC) plunged into a heated debate over homosexuality. With songs and prayers to "Mother God," a Baptist Women in Ministry (auxiliary CBF group) breakfast was rife with stridently feminist God language (see 8/1 CC). The CBF promotes BWIM as a partner in missions and ministry and will give it $30,000 from its 2001-02 budget (8/01 Bapt. Banner). Division and apostasy are rampant in the CBF. Catholic dioceses in The Netherlands face 'radical' restructuring Amsterdam (ENI). In what has been described as a "radical change of course", the Roman Catholic archdiocese of Utrecht, in The Netherlands, is planning to abandon the church's traditional parish structure and replace it with pastoral teams serving groups of parishes. In a brochure sent to the governing bodies of its deaneries and parishes, the archdiocese said that the traditional parish was no longer sufficient to address the "needs and questions of modern believers". Like the other dioceses in the country, the archdiocese is facing falling numbers of clergy and lay members. [Ecumenical News International, Sept 20, 2001]

Release of poll on native schools 'infuriates' church leaders in Canada Vancouver (ENI). The release of the results of a controversial poll commissioned by the federal government has angered Canadian church leaders who say it threatens talks underway to resolve charges of abuse at residential schools for indigenous peoples. Anglican, Presbyterian, Roman Catholic and United Churches are facing about 7000 lawsuits with claims of over C$1 billion (US$700 million) brought by aboriginal people who allege to have been abused sexually, physically or culturally at residential schools operated by the churches on behalf of the federal

Citing language on Israel, US pulls out of racism talks Durban (ENI). The United States' decision to walk out of the world conference on racism - ostensibly over attempts to single out Israel as a racist state - was roundly condemned on Tuesday by delegates and organizers in Durban. The decision on Monday night to scale down the US delegation to the weeklong 163-nation conference in South Africa immediately met with claims that the US had used the Middle East issue to avert attention from the subject of reparations for the transatlantic slave trade. Meanwhile, a document drawn up by a forum of non-governmental organizations as a contribution to the conference's final declaration, caused sharp reaction in many circles. [ENI 9.5.2001]

UN conference ends amid claims that it was overtaken by political deals Durban (ENI). Following frantic through-the-night negotiations, the World Conference Against Racism ended here on Saturday, a day later than scheduled, having agreed a form of words on Israel and on slavery, the most contentious issues before the gathering. According to the deal, hammered out in negotiations between the European Union and the Arab-African bloc, slavery and slave trading were declared crimes against humanity while direct criticism of Israel as a racist state was dropped in the final declaration. The EU was not willing to brand racism or past, trans-Atlantic slave trading as crimes against humanity for fear that this would unleash court cases against countries such as Britain and the United States. About Trade at the Governor's Conference Robert Zoellick US Trade Representive spoke about his analysis of what is going on with global trade. He said that the EU ha 27 trade agreements and 15 more in the making and there are 130 trade agreement around the globe. The US has 2, and 'Free' trade agreements the U.S. has 0. The U.S.has low barriers giving up all the time. There is no level playing field. The U.S. cannot continue to subsidize other countries like it has in the past or it is going to go bankrupt. There was a $50 billion trade deficit between the Japan and the U.S. It has gone up to $80 billion. That is just Japan. The governor from California said that they have to raise state income tax because Medicaid is going through the roof. From the Church of England Newspaper 3rd Aug 2001: Bible verses 'constitute hate' Christian groups were reeling this week in Canada after a Human Rights Commission ruled that Bible verses constituted 'hate'. The ruling was in response to a complaint by three homosexuals after a Mr Hugh Owens, in Regina, Saskatoon, placed an advert in 1997 to coincide with Gay Pride Week. The advert quoted Biblical passages together with a 'stop' sign imposed over a mathematical equal sign and two stick-figure men holding hands.
Valerie Watson, of the board of inquiry commissioned by the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission, ordered Mr Owens to pay $1,500 to each of the three gay activists upset by the advert. Ms Watson said that while the symbol itself may not have communicated hate, it was the Biblical verses that pushed the advertisement over the line. "Owens would have been safe had he nor made references to the Bible," says Professor Ian Hunter, of the Western Ontario Law School in his national newspaper column. "In human rights circles, the Bible is increasingly regarded as an insidious form of hate literature... Freedom of speech, press and religion all yield to a complainant's hurt feelings." After court ruling, more churches in Germany consider same-sex blessings Amsterdam (ENI). As same-sex couples in Germany begin practicing their new right to legally register their partnerships, a number of Protestant churches are considering whether to offer church blessings for such unions. Already two of Germany's 24 Protestant regional churches - in North Elbia and in the Rhineland - offer such a blessing. These developments follow the enacting on 1 August of Germany's new partnership law allowing what have been dubbed "gay marriages". [ENI August 30, 2001]

We may be certain that the hijackers were not Israelis or evangelical Christians. Never! The simple but horrible fact is that only the religion of Islam could supply the motivation for what they did. Why are Muslims responsible for most terrorism in the world today? There is a definitive and foundational reason. It would be extremely naive to imagine that terrorists who are willing to blow themselves up in Israel or to crash a plane at the loss of their own and many other lives do so for some commendable humanitarian cause. The courage comes solely from a unique doctrine of Islam.

Abu-Bakr, the first Caliph to succeed Muhammad (and one of the few to whom Muhammad promised Paradise without martyrdom), declared that even if he had one foot in Paradise he could not trust Allah to let him in. The only sure way in Islam of achieving Paradise is to sacrifice one's life in Jihad. Yes, suicide is forbidden as self-murder. Pope Apologizes for 'ERRORS' In China - Vatican City - Pope John Paull II apologized to China on Wednesday for "errors" in the Roman Catholic Church's missions there and expressed his strong willingness to work toward full diplomatic relations with Beijing. The pontiff has been pressing to normalize relations with China for years, but neither side has said it is prepared to make the changes that diplomatic relations would require.
