There are organizations in the U.S. that want to abolish the National Christmas tree in Washington D.C. and call it the National holiday tree. The Commonwealth of Virginia has been given the honor to provide the 2004 National Holiday Tree with participation from the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests. This gift to the nation is from our entire State. In July the U.S. Capitol Landscape Architect selected a beautiful 70-foot red spruce located in Highland County on the Warm Springs Ranger District of the George Washington National Forest. The tree will be cut in early November. Highland County will host a Send-Off Ceremony on November 13 at 2:00 p.m. at the Highland County Fairground in Monterey. Everyone is invited to join in the fun and see the beautiful red spruce before it leaves on its journey to Washington, D.C. In December, as America watches, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives will throw the switch, lighting the magnificent holiday tree on the front lawn of our nations capitol. The tree will be lit every evening from December 9th through January 1st from sundown until 11 PM. Approximately 70 smaller trees donated by Christmas tree farmers from across the State will be distributed among Washington, D.C. House and Senate office buildings and other government offices as a gift from the people of Virginia. Click here to go to the Capitol Holiday Tree trivia game....
