July 4, 2002 - Brownsville almost burnt down. [ Ednote: Cause
of the fire still has not been established six month later].
Talk about fire! Maybe the Lord is trying to get their attention.
The buzz among church members who gathered outside the huge West Cervantes Street structure was that a direct lightning strike spawned the fire. But Escambia County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Pat Grace said late Thursday night that the official cause of the blaze had not yet been determined. "We are working to put out the main body, while interior
crews are working with hose lines and trying to prevent water
damage," Grace said. Grace said the building was unoccupied when firefighters were called out about 7:30 p.m. They contained the flames to the southwest corner of the roof over the church's sanctuary. Responders from five engine companies, several ladder companies and air support worked together as they attempted to limit the damage at one of Pensacola's largest churches. A small crowd of about 50 church members gathered to watch firefighters battle the smoke and flames. Vickie Rozier, 40, was traveling downtown with her family to celebrate the Fourth of July when they saw the fire trucks at the church. She spent the rest of her evening watching with friends from the church's parking lot. "I just pray that they have it under control and that no one gets injured trying to put it out," Rozier said. The church's membership numbers nearly 3,500. It is best known
over the past seven years for its revivals that have drawn more
than 3 million people from more than 130 countries. |
