Tsunami Update January 4, 2005
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Report from India, Sri Lanka
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Reports coming in to Christian Aid from native missionaries on the ground in some of the worst- affected areas confirm that, while government and international aid is flowing in, it is native Christian workers who are able to provide the immediate relief and spiritual encouragement most urgently needed. Christian Aid's field surveyor in India, reporting by phone this morning, said that the situation both physically and spiritually is unimaginable: "It seems like people have lost all hope. They walk around like they are in a trance- everything is just unreal." The tsunami that
claimed over 150,000 lives also destroyed livelihoods, many of which it had taken years to develop, in a matter of minutes. Jochen Tewes, leader of Inter-Mission in Tamil Nadu, writes that "almost all fishing villages are badly damaged, and people there lost almost all belongings." Those who relied on their boats to feed themselves and their families are suddenly without any prospects for income. Many were barely getting by and have no reserved resources with which to start over. Though countries around the globe have pledged over $2 billion in aid, much of it has yet to reach victims, with most roads still impassable. Hundreds of church buildings were destroyed in India. Christians expect no government aid for such losses and will rely more than ever on
fellow believers to help them rebuild. The island
country of Sri Lanka off the southern tip of India was second only to Indonesia in number of lives lost.
Thankfully, no indigenous ministries were directly
harmed, but many of indigenous churches were
demolished. some information about such villages and have begun targeting them with relief aid." India Gospel Outreach in Kerala state, where waters in some places came a mile inland, sent a team from its Bible college to take aid to victims and has planned several more trips to deliver the food, clothing and utensils donated at four emergency centers set up by the ministry. Another mission is giving families allotments of money to put up small temporary shelters. Tewes of Inter-Mission has worked among coastal communities for years and writes, "Although
many organizations are helping and the government is giving massive relief, there are big gaps that only organizations like ours can fill, since we have grass- roots workers who have known the village people a long time." Sri Lanka ministries are working among the tens of thousands of victims in their country. The leader of a ministry among children, reports, "We have been
collecting clothing and food, as these were the
immediate needs, and dispatching them to displaced persons who are housed in churches, temples and schools. Our volunteers are also clearing roads. We are praying much for the displaced persons, especially for children, as there are reports of homeless children being abused." Another Sri Lanka ministry has also set up medical clinics in eight locations. Prayer is perhaps the greatest need. Valson Abraham of India Gospel Outreach writes to fellow believers around the
world, "Please pray for God to comfort those who are grieving. Pray for wisdom and strength for our workers who are helping the victims."
